Add a VPN Shortcut to the Vista Desktop

Add a VPN Shortcut to the Vista Desktop

Add a VPN Shortcut to the Vista Desktop
To create a VPN shortcut, you just need to drill down to the right Vista settings window.
Heres something annoying about Vista: When you set up a new VPN connection (which many people do so they can log onto their office networks from home), you dont get the option to create a desktop shortcut like you did with Windows XP.
Fortunately, theres a simple workaround. Im going to assume you already know how to get your VPN connection up and running. (If not, leave a comment below and Ill tackle that little nugget in a future post.) Once youre tied into the VPN, follow these steps to create the shortcut:
1. Click Start, type Network, and then click Network and Sharing Center.
2. On the lefthand side, under Tasks, click Manage network connections.
3. You should see your connection listed in the Virtual Private Network section. Right-click the icon, and then choose Create Shortcut.
4. Vista will indicate that you cant create a shortcut here, but would you like one on the desktop instead?
5. Click Yes and youre done!
Now just double-click the shortcut icon and presto: You can sign right into your VPN.
What is a VPN?
VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) were first used by companies to enable their employees to securely access internal systems such as email remotely (e.g. from home or while on business trips). Today they are increasingly being used for personal use by individuals to protect their privacy while online in public places (e.g. when using the wi-fi connection in a cafe) or in a country where the internet is censored / blocked (e.g. China, Saudi Arabia).
Why do I need a VPN?
Whether youre an expat living in a foreign country where the internet is heavily regulated, a mobile user constantly on the road, or just someone concerned with maintaining their privacy online, having aVPNis becoming essential.
